The Vale do Lobo Golf Resort, in the Algarve, Portugal, is home to two exceptional golf courses: Ocean and Royal. Both golf courses are based on concepts by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton and redeveloped by renowned American golf course architect Rocky Roquemore.
The two Vale do Lobo golf courses complement each other perfectly. The Royal Golf Course is characterised by undulating fairways that are set amidst pine trees and beautiful lakes and surrounded by wildflowers, leading unsuspecting golfers to its pièce de résistance: the 16th hole.
This 6175-metre championship course is much harder to play than the Ocean Course. There are more water and sand hazards here, and the holes are also generally longer.
The highlights of the Vale do Lobo Ocean course include the island green of the par 3 9th hole and the famous 16th hole, a par 3 with a cliff-top carryover which has become a symbol of golf in the Algarve and Portugal. Holes 6, 16 and 17 are also worth mentioning, featuring a number of water hazards. The last hole is not particularly long, but the green has a raised banking to the left and the ground falls steeply away to the right.
A host of top-notch clubhouse facilities enhance the Vale do Lobo golf experience. The resort is home to an excellent brasserie and restaurant, practice and training facilities and a fully-equipped fitness centre.
